EMS Bursary Programme 2013 CITY OF JOBURG EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SERVICES YOUTH DEVELOPMENT BURSARY PROGRAM


1. INTRODUCTION

The City Of Joburg Emergency Management Services recognizes the importance and significant role young people play in the city in improving Public Safety and therefore they have initiated the Emergency Management Services Youth Development Program bursary program.

Johannesburg has a youthful population and a large number of them live in difficult conditions that may lead to vulnerability and desperation. Young people continue to be perpetrators and victims of crime, substance abuse, HIV /AIDS, teenage pregnancy, unemployment etc, because of a lack of opportunities within the City and thus turn to be a threat to safety.

 

The City Of Joburg Emergency Management Services is offering twenty (20) young people residing within the city of Johannesburg bursaries in Medical and Fire Technology for the year 2013.

 

2. OBJECTIVES

Through this program we aim to acknowledge and address the following issues and challenge our Youth face today in relating to public safety.

 

  • To promote Emergency Management Services in the city of Joburg and to assist students pursuing a career in Emergency Management or a related field (examples, to name a few; Public Safety, Disaster management, Public Services, Risk Management……)

 

  • To further develop disadvantaged young people within the city of Johannesburg

 

  • To provide opportunities to facilitate the development of young people within the City.

 

  • To improve employment opportunities amongst our youth.

 

3. TERM:

  • One bursary per geographical area per 4 year term.
  • Award will be sent to the student’s higher education facility.

 

4. TARGET

  • 20 Young people residing within the City of Joburg between the ages of 16-35yrs

 

5. TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

  • University of Johannesburg
  • Tshwane university of Technology

 

6. SELECTION CRITERIA

Bursary will be awarded based on the quality of a student’s financial need, essay, community involvement, student records, grades, and personal references.

 

6.1 All APPLICATIONS

  • Reviewed by the bursary Committee.
  • An Emergency Management Official will make the presentation to the High Schools
  • The Application and Essay Deadline is 28th September 2012.

 

6.2 Bursary Payment

Bursary payment will be awarded to the student’s higher education facility. This bursary is primarily for the purpose to cover:

  • Books, or can be used for
  • Tuition,
  • Other college related expenses.

 

6.3 Committee

  • Volunteer program
  • Other relevant stakeholders

 

6.4 Qualification

  • NQ LEVEL 7
  • 4 years honors degree fire technology
  • 4year honors degree in medical technology

 

6.5 Requirements

  • SA Matric certificate
  • Underprivileged young people
  • Minimum D symbol in the following subjects:
  • Mathematic
  • Physical Science
  • Biology
  • Physically fit
  • Good Health
  • Interested in the EMS profession
  • Previous experience in the EMS Department will be an added advantage

 

6.6 Recruitment process

  • 2012 City of Joburg Emergency Management youth development Scholarship form.
  • This form should be reproduced and sent to all area high schools in vulnerable communities.

  • Youth forums etc
  • Media
  • 1st phase:
  • short listing
  • 2nd phase: interviews
  • 3rd phase: induction include basic first aid and fire training/Financial/business management
  • 4th phase: commerce with studies

 

Conclusion

This is a youth development flagship program and studies should commence from January 2013.
